Plurality and Nation – Visions of Society
Learning Partnership funded by the European Union’s Grundtvig programme
 
Nation – does it mean: folklore groups, “Leitkultur” (defining culture), pride and strong feelings? Is nation linked with clear connotations like Sauna and Sibelius (= FIN), Breughel and chocolates (= BE), sauerkraut and control (= GE)? Does nation represent “the typical”, “the whole thing”, the (abstract) sense of “we”?
 
This perspective on “nation” does not really reflect the colourful reality. On many places you can meet people with different languages and living contexts, who have something in common and who are seperated by many things, too. German cooks, Turkish businesswomen and Polish gallery owners are sharing the traffic routes, theatres, cinemas, hospitals, solicitors and hairdressers of one town. But they are practicing their languages and preferring their clubs and bars. “But”? Also! Most of the immigrants are switching between cultures and languages every day. Lots of them are feeling like “double home”.
The image of a homogeneous, “unitary” nation seems to be obsolete not only inwards the societies, but also regarding the external relations. The “whole thing” is put into perspective due to inter-national relationships in a world which moves together by Internet and budget flights. Nation is not the only the reference anymore, the framework gets open and is enlarging. Trans-national exchange will be more and more taken for granted – in the distance as well as locally.
 
But what does “transnational nations”, what does societies connect? How can integration be practised in contexts of delimitation? In which way is belonging to a community possible? What means sense and how can it be experienced? How can we foster common wealth, democracy and self-organisation?
 
We have no (fixed) answers. We have questions.
 
We – that means: learners from the Community High School Wahren-opisto in Forssa / Finland, the art association art27 in Hasselt / Belgium and the political education provider Arbeit und Leben in Berlin / Germany.
 
Every partner organisation is dealing with the theme on their local groups. Through six transnational meetings in Forssa, Hasselt and Berlin we have an exchange trans-gressing our borders and working with creative methods on these questions.

Nation, meint das: Folklore-Gruppe, Leitkultur, Stolz und starke Gefühle? Bedeutet Nation eine klare Zu-Ordnung wie: Sauna und Sibelius (= FIN), Breughel und Pralinen (= BE), Sauerkraut und Kontrolle (= DE)? Verkörpert Nation das Typische, das große Ganze, das (abstrakte) Wir-Gefühl?
 
Diese Vorstellung scheint die bunte Wirklichkeit nicht (mehr) zu treffen. Vielerorts begegnet man Menschen verschiedener Sprachen und (Lebens-)Welten, die manches verbindet und einiges trennt. Deutsche Köche, türkische Unternehmerinnen und polnische Galeristen teilen sich die Verkehrswege, Theater, Kinos, Krankenhäuser, Rechtsanwälte und Friseure einer Stadt. Aber sie bewegen sich in ihrer Sprache und bevorzugen „ihre“ Klubs und Kneipen. „Aber“? Auch! Die meisten Dazugekommenen „switchen“ tagaus, tagein zwischen den Kulturen und Sprachen. Viele fühlen sich irgendwie „zweiheimisch“.
Das Bild von der homogenen, einheitlichen Nation scheint aber nicht nur „nach innen“, sondern auch nach außen nicht (mehr) zuzutreffen. Das „große Ganze“ relativiert sich in der inter-nationalen Verflechtung einer durch Internet und Billigflüge zusammenrückenden Welt. Nation ist nicht der alleinige Bezugsrahmen, dieser öffnet und erweitert sich. Trans-nationaler Austausch wird immer selbstverständlicher – in der Ferne wie auch vor Ort.
 
Was aber hält „transnationale Nationen“, was hält Gesellschaften zusammen? Was ermöglicht Integration in der Entgrenzung? Was stiftet Heimat, was ermöglicht es, dazu zu gehören? Was vermittelt Sinn? Wie können wir Gemeinsinn, Demokratie und Selbstorganisation stärken?
 
Wir haben keine (festen) Antworten. Wir haben Fragen.
 
 
Jede Partnerorganisation befasst sich in ihren Gruppen mit dem Thema. Während sechs transnationaler Treffen in Forssa, Hasselt und Berlin tauschen wir uns über unsere Grenzen hinweg darüber aus und arbeiten mit kreativen Methoden an den Fragen.
