Sain keväällä 2009 hienon tilaisuuden matkustaa Belgiaan. Uudelleen ajatteleva ryhmä matkusti etsimään eurooppalaisuutta. Minulle Belgia oli aiemmin tunnettu Brysselistä, pitsistä ja suklaasta. Oikeastaan muuta en tiennyt. Toki Belgian sijainti Euroopan kartalla oli selvillä,

suurin piirtein. Jo koulussa maantiedon tunneilla opiskeltiin maat ja niiden pääkaupungit sekä asukasluvut ulkoa.

Brysselissä vastaan tuli historiallista havinaa; upeita, vanhoja rakennuksia. Kaduilla oli kävellyt ennen meitä monenlaisia ihmisiä. Meillä Suomessa rakennukset ovat vaatimattomampia kuin esimerkiksi Keski- ja Etelä-Euroopan pääkaupungeissa. Brysselin kaupunginmuseossa huomasin, että Manneken Pis on hyvin tärkeä patsas. Itse patsas olikin yllättävän pienikokoinen, vain 60 senttimetriä korkea. Sen kerrotaan olevan brysseliläinen henkisen vapauden symboli.



Eurooppalaisuus, mistä sitä löytyy? Brysselissä suklaapuodin tyttö viittaili Skandinavian suuntaan. Mistä löytyy Ranskan vallankumouksen sanoma: vapaus, veljeys ja tasa-arvo sekä niiden peräänkuuluttamat oikeudet? Ehkä keskitietä kulkeminen on toteutunut parhaiten Skandinaviassa. Vai johtuuko tämä näkemykseni siitä, että katselen maailmaa suomalaisin sinivalkoisin silmin?
Ehkä.

Millaisena me näemme maailman riippuu pitkälle saamastamme kasvatuksesta.
Koulutus on tärkeä tapa kehittää itseään. Katsominen suomalaisin silmin ei lainkaan tarkoita sitä, että en olisi kiinnostunut muiden ihmisten maailmasta ja heidän elämästään, päinvastoin.

Jo aikoinaan eri maiden tutkijoiden yhteistyönä maailman ja  maailmankaikkeuden ymmärtäminen avartui. Taide ja tiede ovat parhaat  ihmisten yhdistäjät. Uskonto ja politiikka aiheuttavat herkästi
erimielisyyksiä.

Me olemme eurooppalaisia ja meistä jokainen tuo eurooppalaisuutta tähän yhteisöön. Eurooppalaisuus on meissä itsessä omalla tavallamme. Meillä on  kuitenkin yhteinen, ihanasti lämmittävä aurinko, romanttisia hetkiä antava  kuu ja mahtava tähtitaivas. Nauttikaamme niistä yhdessä.

It’s time to rethink it, while we still can.

I got a great opportunity to travel to Belgium in the spring 2009. Re-thinking group (Eliisa, Tanja and I, Seija) traveled to search for the European. To me, Belgium was familiar from Brussels, lace and chocolate. Actually, only this much I knew. Sure, the location of Belgium on the European map I was aware of, roughly. Already in school geography classes we studied for countries and their capitals and population figures by heart.

In Brussels, we came against the historical memories, wonderful, old buildings. The streets of Brussels had been walked by before us a wide range of people. We in Finland have more modest buildings than Central and South European capitals. In The City Museum of Brussels, I noticed that the Manneken Pis statue is very important to the Belgians. The statue itself was surprisingly small, only 60 centimeters high. It is said to be the Brussels symbol of the intellectual freedom.

European identity, where can it be found? In Brussels the saleswoman in a little chocolate shop spoke in favour of Scandinavian. So that for example in Finland and in Sweden one could find purer European than in southern Europe. Where can I find the message of the French Revolution: liberty, fraternity and equality, and the associated rights? Perhaps these values have been best achieved in Scandinavia. Or is this view because I am looking at the world through the colours of the blue and white Finnish flag? Maybe.

How we see the world largely depends on the upbringing we have received. Education is an important way to develop ourselves. Looking through the Finnish eyes does not mean that I would not be interested in other people's world and their lives, on the contrary.

Already in the early times, the collaboration between scientists from different countries helped the understanding of the world and the universe. Art and science are the best way to connect people. Religion and politics can easily cause differences.

We are European and every one of us brings to this community of being European. European is within each of us in an individual way. However, we have the common lovely warm Sun, romantic moments under the same Moon and the spectacular starry sky. Each of us may enjoy them in peace.
